Good Afternoon Michelle,
My question is this. I love my job, but I have a problem.
It’s one of my co-workers. She is constantly stealing items from the company
that we work at. It started off with small items every week, but now she does
it on an everyday basis. It really makes me feel uncomfortable, because she does it
in front of everyone when our manager/owner isn’t around. It is a small family-owned
business. I can tell it makes my co-workers uncomfortable too, but no one has
said anything. Being a Christian, I feel really bad about withholding this from
my boss, because we work for a great company. Should I say something or should
I just keep my mouth shut?

Thanks for your question. This is a very sticky situation
that should be handled with discretion. With this crazy thing going around
about not snitching, people are overlooking and dismissing behavior that should
not be tolerated. This really annoys me. The uncomfortable feeling you’re having whenever you see this
is more than likely the Holy Spirit, as I’m sure He’s not pleased with what He
sees. As Believers we should set the
standard, not that we’re better, but that we KNOW better. You have to look at it
this way, if this was your company, wouldn’t you want someone to let you know
if an employee was stealing you blind? You
did say you love your job, and I’m assuming you do so because your employers are
great people to work for. Who knows, one day you may want your own business.
You should sow the seeds of loyalty to your employer so that your harvest will
be loyal employees for yourself. Luke 16:12 Listen, you don’t have to go and
sit down and have a meeting with them (unless you want to). But, I do suggest
that you type a letter and give/mail it to them anonymously, telling them what
is going on. Who knows, they may have a surveillance camera in the company and
already know what’s happening. Sometimes people want to see how much integrity
someone has and are just waiting to see who will say something. Haven’t you
seen ABC’s, “What Would You Do?” Lol…hey, it could happen! It’s time that
integrity and morality take a stand. The spirit of lawlessness and entitlement
has taken over the land. People want what’s not theirs and if you don’t give it
to them, they think they have the right to take it! I mean really...who does that? From the looks of it, way too many people! Besides, the
Bible tells us that we are to avoid the very appearance of evil. If the owners in
any way think that you may somehow be involved, your job could be in jeopardy. Remember,
this is your job you’re talking about here. You have NO obligation to anyone
who IS NOT giving you a paycheck. Ask God to help you make the best decision on
how to handle this situation. Also, pray for your co-worker. She may not realize it now, but I can guarantee you, she really doesn't want to live this way. I’m sure He’ll give you the answer, especially
when your heart is to do the right thing. Hope this helps! Have a wonderful

I know you didn't ask me should I say something & Michell's response is all well with me, but I would tell & not anonymously! I don't play about my money & I too love my job. Nobody is going to jeopardize it. Plus, I want it very clear to all employees at ALL times where I stand. Do NOT include me in any way with your antics on my job, my side hustles, just period. DeleteAmen, Michell! I think (just my two cents) that this is about integrity - not just being loyal to the company, but also about being loyal to our standards. Sometimes, God ALLOWS situations such as this to be placed before us just so that we can see if we have the type of integrity that we claim that we do. HE already knows how we will or we won't respond. HE needs us to know for ourselves how we will or we won't respond. My prayers are with the person who had this question - believing that she/he will do what is pleasing to our Lord.

DeleteThis is my first time reading this series and let me tell you, this is well worth reading.. I would vote for 'anonymously reporting' since identifying yourself and reporting it will unnecessarily might put you in trouble.. just a thought...

DeleteGreat answer! I cannot understand people who steal...it is just so unethical. I think whether the person speaks up anonymously, or speaks directly to the owner is up to them and may have to do with what is in their comfort zone. But definitely they should speak up!

DeleteI totally agree with you Michell. One of our employee used to steal toilet paper and paper towel from our office. We suspected that it was going on, but no one spoke up. Eventually we inventoried all the items and was able to pin point when things went missing. We ended up letting that person go. I wished someone had spoken up. It would've showed some loyalty.
ReplyDeleteHey Hope! That use to happen at our church awhile back...IKR! What is it about tp and pt...I guess we ALL need them both at some point during the day, lol! We never found out, though. We had our suspicions, but never found out. They're gone now, but they know who they are! Lol! :-) My thing is this, if they had just come to us and told us they needed it(obviously they did), then more than likely we would have just blessed them with it; seeing as if we are a church and we have the heart of Christ. That's what churches do right...give to the needy. In your case however, you have a BUSINESS...two different entities. So, you must do what you have to do. Thanks so much Hope for chiming in!
