"Michell's Weekly Pearl"...(fed up with them)

advice column question about representing Christ
As always, I thank you for joining me for another edition of  "Michell's Weekly Pearl", where I seek to use Godly wisdom to offer encouragement. If this is your first time visiting, I'll tell you a little about my advice series. This is where you can ask me anything on marriage, women's issues, family matters, relationships, parenting, homemaking, or life in general. If you want an honest, biblically based, to the point answer; email me your questions via prowessandpearls@gmail.com (please put "MWP" in the subject area). I'll post your question, along with my answer, anonymously. Easy as that! I'll also delete your email once I've transferred your question. To read all the questions and answers in this series, you can do so (HERE).

Keep sending in those questions!!! In the meantime, read on to see what "Fed Up With Them" asked...

Hello Michelle,

Being a minister’s wife, I know you see sin all around you. I, personally, am at the point where I can’t take it anymore! Every time I look up, there’s something new, from gay marriages, to abortions, to idolatry and everything in between.  Their agenda seems to be in the forefront and is overshadowing the church. As a minister’s wife, how do you and your husband handle/deal with the onslaught of sin that is running rapid in our nation?

Hi “Fed Up With Them”. Thanks for your question. The first thing we as “Believers” must do is LOVE!! No secret formula, no magic potion…just LOVE. NOT our(human) kind of love either, but Christ’s love. We forget that sin has been in the land since the beginning of time, so we mustn’t act as if it’s some “new” thing. Listen, sinners do what they do best very well and that's SINNING. So why are we so surprised and in an upheaval when they do it? It behooves me when I see Christians act shocked and are in disbelief when people sin. But, that means that we(Believers) aren’t doing our jobs – walking in love and praying. Believers don’t like to hear this, but the enemy is very good at what he does, we on the other hand have somehow dropped the ball. We’ve gotten so far from Jesus’ heart where the unbeliever is concerned. Nowadays we point fingers, turn our noses up, judge, accuse and yes, even hate them! As if we(AFTER we’ve received Him in our hearts) are squeaky clean ourselves! YES, HATE the sin, but LOVE the sinner! We’ve gotten it twisted, we now hate the sin AND the sinner. This is so not the will of the Father. Sad to say, but we’ve even brought that same mentality into the Body of Christ concerning our fellow Believers who have fallen to sin. We use the spirit of religion to beat people up as opposed to the love of Christ to draw them to Him! I even wonder if Jesus is more disappointed with our actions than He is with theirs, because we know better. In all honesty, why would anyone want to come to know Him with the way some of us are representing Him? I know that if I were an unbeliever, I wouldn’t. We are to love people so much that it opens their hearts to allow Christ to come in and do the work. That's it! We make it more complicated than it is, you know why, because we have our flesh and personal opinions involved. As the Body of Christ, we must re-evaluate how we’re representing Him, go BACK in His Word and SEE how He did it(dealt with sin and sinners) and DO only that!

As much as we may hate sin, we still must approach them the way Jesus did. My husband instills this into our congregation. Two things he said that were profound to me...(1) it's not what we say in opposition to sin, it's what we do in opposition to sin that will counter attack it and (2) people don't want to hear about your Jesus if you're using your Jesus to belittle them. Great advice, don't you think!  Btw…my good friend Chris who blogs over at "THE MOM CAFE" wrote an excellent post on this very subject, which I think hits the nail on the head. You can read it HERE. I apologize for any harshness that may be in my answer, but I’m very passionate about this subject, as our command from Christ is to seek and save the lost by showing others His love and through His love, they'll be drawn to Him. Thank you again for your question…have a blessed weekend!

I’ve been married for over 24 years to my husband, a pastor. I’ve worked alongside him in ministry full-time for over 17 years. During that time, we've pioneered two ministries and I've established a women’s ministry(Women of Excellence). We have three adult children and a son-in-law.  My areas of specialty are family, marriage and women’s issues. Hopefully the (Godly)wisdom I’ve learned through my years of experience will lead you to and keep you on the road to doing you well!  As my husband always says...why spend your life going down a road you don't have to travel, when someone else has already learned the lesson and can show you how to avoid that path.

  2. Hate the sin, love the sinner. You are so right. Too often we cast down and destroy with our words and actions while claiming Christ. Like you said, sin had been around from the beginning of time. May be show Christ love to everyone so that they'd want to know more of Him. Great word Michelle

    1. IKR Hope! We can be so self-righteous at times can't we? That's the only way they'll want to know Him...if we show Him in a loving light. Thanks for stopping by Hope!

  4. Whoa now! Amen! You speak a hard truth that I'm sure is a global issue. It's tough but I try my best to keep in mind that I'm still a sinner and I wouldn't want a Christain who's more advanced in their journey to "hate" me.

  5. So true, hate the sin love the sinner. We have to examine our own lives and see how we are measuring up. We have to show love and let our light shine.

This was a perfect question to answer... as it reflects the heart of many Christians today. You KNOW how I feel about it. I must add my link and offer it for this woman to read- maybe it will remind her again who Jesus is.
